Welcome to Fretboard Formulas! As guitarists our goal is to speak the language of music fluently across the fretboard. The best place to start is understanding the Musical Alphabet.

Fretboard Formula 1: Notes of the Open Strings + Musical Alphabet

Fretboard Formula 1

Fretboard Formula 2: 12 fret octave formula. This is perhaps the easiest fretboard formula, but so vital to understand where octaves lie on the each individual string.

Fretboard Formula 3: Same note / adjacent string. This will allow you to identify and memorize same notes in the same octave across the fretboard using adjacent strings.

Fretboard Formula 5: 6-4 5-3 Octave. Be able to locate and memorize notes on the D and G string easily with this octave formula.
